The CEU Weekly’s Party Diary: Re-Opening of Corvintető

“An underground club above the city? What is this???” is a natural question for anyone visiting Corvintető to ask.  You enter the place, though, and you understand.

Last week, as a part of our Party Diary series reports, we checked out the re-opening of this club which involved whole five days of quality music events. From Wednesday till Saturday, from Hungarian DJs like the famous Dublic twins to Portuguese Xinobi, from dance punk to jungle drum’n’bass: whatever music you like, there’s a good chance you’ll find yourself dancing till 5am with a bunch of sworn partiers. That’s what we did and were among the last ones to leave the place on a…Friday morning.

Why Corvintető?
Here’s a straightforward answer for you: because it’s so damn cool! Quality electronic music, rough look, more than affordable entrance fee (which is, even more conveniently, sometimes even non-existent!), and, oh, did we mention it had its famous terrace? OK, if not in February, check it out later in the spring (though smokers could appreciate it right away). Besides, it’s right on Blaha Lujza square: only several meters away from a metro/bus/tram stop. The adventure of getting home in the morning is nicely eased.

So, what’s new?
If you’ve been to the place before, you’ll now notice new light installations, different colors, some cool decorations, and – drums please! – a brand new dance floor. If for some reason the main one doesn’t seems enough (or maybe feels too crowded, if that’s ever a minus), check the other one out. To be honest, we were wondering whether refurbished Corvintető will manage to keep its appealing undergroundish-industrial look, and…we’re saved: it still does. “I would have come back here often even if they hadn’t changed a thing”, we were told by a partygoer leaving the club with us at 5am, trying to speak as eloquently as his state allowed.

 The Point
The point is, when the weekend comes, have Corvintető in mind. We were a bit skeptical towards its new look but the second the newly installed system of lights went off we joined the bunch of other people in their amazement. Can lights make people jump higher? Apparently, yes. You can check that out for yourself next weekend.

PS. We even managed to chat with one of the Dublic brothers! Dublic is a DJ project of two Hungarian win brothers that rocked—we emphasize—rocked the place on Thursday and will be coming back to Corvintető again soon.
