EC sides with France over migrant trains

The European Commission has decided that France acted legally when it stopped trains at the Italian border because they had carried migrants from Africa.  Despite the supposed freedom of movement afforded under the Schengen Agreement, the Commission deemed France’s actions prudent after the country cited its need to maintain public order.

Many of the migrants were coming from Tunisia and other areas of recent conflict in North Africa, and though initial reports suggested they had all the necessary legal papers to enter France, French authorities are now suggesting many were without proper visas.  The situation has caused a minor row between France and Italy, not to mention disruption along a vital and popular transport route between the two nations.
