Verzio - International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival

This film festival will take place in Budapest from November 5th through the 10th and promises 62 films from 25 countries at 6 different venues. The festival is still accepting applications for the student film jury (even though the stated deadline is October 15th), so if you are interested in voting on the film which will collect the grand prize of 100,000ft and willing to commit to watching all student films – sign up quick. It’s a great way to see the films for free, and you also get a free festival pass for a lucky companion! The full menu of presentations is not yet available, however judging by the trailers of the films they have listed so far, I would recommend the following.

The Act of Killing: Directed by Joshua Oppenheimer (Denmark)
The film makers challenged a former head executioner in the Indonesian genocide to recreate the mass killings he oversaw. He accepted, and the story of the making of the film has been called everything from “haunting” to “the most compelling thing you will ever see”.

The Imposter: Directed By Bart Layton (UK)
The true story of a 23 year old Frenchman, who in 1999 convinced an American family that he was their long lost son. While at first he comes off as a scam artist the plot thickens and more and more the viewer starts asking themselves if they wouldn’t have done the same thing!

Camp 14: Directed by Mark Wiese (UK)
The story of current day prison camps in North Korea, which have many similarities to those in Nazi Germany. Details are conveyed by escapees as well as former prison guards and include chilling details of the regular occurrence of everything from rape to murder.
