Coming Soon: The New Hungarian Airlines

Malév Hungarian Airlines ceased operations on February 3, 2012 due to financial collapse. Malév Ltd. was established in 1946 and functioned as the national airline of Hungary up until 2007. In the last 5 years of existence it became private property, however the various owners did apparently not succeed in rendering Malév profitable. The company could not compete with the low-cost airline companies.

Nevertheless, one and a half year later, in August 2013, a new airline company will be founded in Hungary: Sólyom (meaning falcon) Hungarian Airways. Similarly to Malév, Sólyom will not compete in the sphere of low-cost airlines, but in the premium segment. Although the planes of Sólyom will shine in Hungarian national colors, and is commonly referred to as "the offspring of Malév" and "the new national airline", the company is not connected to the state in any form.

Starting in August, Sólyom will have flights only to European and Middle-Eastern destinations. However, from the next year it might fly overseas as well.
