Important Information from the CEU Student Union Concerning Roma Access Program Students' Voting

In an effort to clarify why Roma Access Program student representatives to the CEU Student Union do not have voting privileges, the following statement was prepared by Student Union President Emily Šaras, and was ratified at the Student Union General Assembly Meeting on Monday January 28, 2013.

We, the collective Members of the Central European University Student Union General Assembly 2012 - 2013, hereby offer our conditional support of allowing Roma Access Program students, should it be found legally possible by Hungarian national law, to gain voting rights and other privileges as full members of the CEU Student Union General Assembly.  As it currently stands within the Hungarian law, Student Unions are legally-recognized bodies whose voting members must be students enrolled in degree-granting Masters and PhD programs. This clause in Hungarian law excludes the Roma Access Program students from voting membership in Student Unions, as this program is currently structured without the conferment of a degree at the completion of the program. Should a possibility be found by the CEU legal team to circumvent this obstacle, the CEU Student Union pledges to allow Roma Access Program students to vote. In the meantime, we welcome the student representatives of the Roma Access Program to General Assembly meetings and encourage them to continue participating actively within discussions, event planning, and other activities with their colleagues of the Student Union General Assembly.
Any questions regarding this statement should be addressed to the Student Union Board via studentunion@ceu.hu
